Our Guardianship-Mentoring Program was designed in
response to figures indicating that there is a high failure
rate amongst young Asian students studying and living in
Australia. A large percentage of Asian students, particularly
teenagers residing in Australia, without any/limited
parental/guardian support or supervision were failing to
complete their main goal to study in institutions in
Australia. In many cases, these students had been sent back to
their home country by Australian authorities because they
failed to meet the basic academic requirements for a host of
reasons.
Many of these cases could have been avoided if
adequate supervision and monitoring had been given earlier by
a quality Guardian. Our professional Guardians have helped
Hundreds of those students to avoid "Ronny's"
fate.
Academic failure seriously undermines and impacts
negatively on the life chances of students; the viability of
Australian institutions hosting international students and
frustrates parents- who often make great financial sacrifices
to provide such opportunities for their
children.
In a serious attempt to counteract this situation, we
have developed our Guardianship-Mentoring Program which
extends the traditional notions of
¡®guardian¡±.
Our program¡¯s uniqueness lies in its ability to
¡°match¡± the individual student with her own personal,
one-on-one professional guardian-mentor, whose aim is to
oversee the student¡¯s SOCIAL and ACADEMIC life in Australia.
The guardian-mentor ensures that the student stays ¡°on course¡±
to achieve short-term and long-term goals while pursuing
education in Australia. This is done by regular contact (via
telephone & face to face) between the mentor and student,
between the mentor and the institution representative and
between APA and parents. All issues and difficulties the
student may face while studying and residing in Australia are
dealt with immediately by the Guardian-Mentor. These problems
can be resolved and avoided by immediate and early
intervention.
The personal
guardian- mentor, in effect, will assist the student in
achieving successful educational and social outcomes by
providing an immediate, strong, viable and effective support
network in partnership with the host institution.
Our program seeks to address the many
hurdles that Asian students face while studying and living in
the Australian social/academic environment.
